After a summer hiatus (for both blog and show), it’s time to return to Storybrooke for the beginning of the fifth season of Once Upon A Time, which premieres this Sunday, September 27 at 8pm on ABC.
When last we saw the Storybrooke Residents (blog pun), Henry became the Author (without a pen), Rumple lost the Darkness, and Emma took it by sacrificing herself to become the Dark One instead of Regina. Now with Emma Swan as the new Dark One, her loved ones must find a way to get rid of the Darkness and the only one who can do that is…Merlin.
What’s to Come
With Merlin being the only one who can save Emma, its off to Camelot. At this summer’s annual San Diego Comic Con, executive producers, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, revealed a new clip from the season five premiere of what happens immediately after Emma’s name appears on the dagger. Take a look if you haven’t seen it:
What We Know
There has been plenty of clues revealed since shooting for the new season began in July. First, the premiere’s name as been properly named, “The Dark Swan.”
Now a quick lightning round of Once Upon A Time season 5 spoilers:
- Henry will have his first crush (EW)
- Snow and Charming will have some disagreements on the best way to save Emma (EW)
- The theme for 5A…”Love is a Dangerous Weapon” (TVLine)
- Regina and Emma have a role shift with the former ‘Evil Queen’ becoming the Savior to help Emma (TVLine)
- The story will be similar to 3B (Wicked Witch) with a present day story and the story in Camelot (TV Fanatic)
- Eddy and Adam described recently upgraded cast member, Rebecca Mader’s character of Zelena as a “wild card,” now that she is pregnant with Robin Hood’s child. (TVLine)
Who’s Coming and Returning?
Since Once is exploring a new land it seems only fitting that we would meet the new characters within it. But, in addition to the new characters we’ll meet from Camelot, we’ll also see the return of fan-favorites from seasons past.
On the list of new characters are Arthur (Liam Garrigan), Guinevere (Joana Metrass), and the sorcerer Merlin, himself, (Elliot Knight). The most notable addition from the Disney world is Merida (Amy Manson), the first character from Pixar. Here’s a sneak peek of her first appearance:
Back to our favorites. The Camelot journey will also bring the long-awaited returns of Ruby/Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory), Lancelot (Sinqua Walls), and even Mulan (Jamie Chung).
With Mulan’s re-appearance, co-exec producer, Eddy Kitsis, revealed that Once Upon A Time will be exploring its first LGBT storyline. During Mulan’s last appearance (3×03, “Quite A Common Fairy”), it was strongly hinted that Mulan had fallen in love with Princess Aurora (Sarah Bolger), but she did not reveal them to her since Aurora was pregnant with her and Prince Philip’s son.
As mentioned above, we’ll also get more stories with not only Zelena, but with the other upgraded cast member Sean Maguire (Robin Hood), who, can we hopefully say, finally settled with Regina (or at least as settled as Storybrooke can get).
